Value of Daily Discernment

St. Ignatius of Loyola

When we pause for a moment during the day and ask for the divine’s spiritual guidance, we can begin to feel accompanied in everything we do. St. Ignatius of Loyola emphasized this with the priests joining the new Jesuit order.

We can do it at noon, and then again before dinner, and look for the movement of spirits in our attractions and resistance. His method for discerning spirits is described in detail in his instructions for the Spiritual Exercises either over nine months or for a 30-day intensive. For a more simple practice, Brother Lawrence suggested taking a minute at various times during the day, when you think of it, to ask the divine for the gift of a deeper awareness of  the presence of God in the present moment, here and now. Then, pay attention to your thoughts later in the day or even over the next few days. I had amazing results at an expanded awareness beyond anything I could have dreamed of.
